Former Texas running back Roschon Johnson flashed some upside in his rookie year with the Chicago Bears, but the former fourth-round pick saw his stock take a hit when veteran D’Andre Swift was signed to the roster this offseason. However, Johnson could be poised for more opportunities moving forward. According to ESPN Insider Jeremy Fowler, the Bears are preparing to give Johnson an “extended look” this Sunday against the Rams. After not seeing the field in the first two weeks, Johnson had a 37% snap share in last week’s win over the Indianapolis Colts, and his opportunities could continue to increase.
The Bears rushed to sign Swift to a three-year, $24 million contract soon after free agency began this year, and that decision looks awful through three weeks. According to PFF, Swift has averaged just 1.8 YPC, the worst of all qualified running backs, and has somehow only forced three missed tackles on 37 rushing attempts. Johnson looked far more dynamic in his opportunity last Sunday, rushing eight times for 30 yards, including 28 yards after first contact, per PFF. He added four catches for 32 yards and displayed the pass protection chops that made him such an enticing NFL prospect.
